Jobcentre Plus
Jobcentre Plus is a government-funded employment agency and social security office that can be found in most cities, whose aim it is to help people of working age find employment in the UK. It was formed when the Employment Service merged with the Benefits Agency and was renamed Jobcentre Plus in 2002. It is a part of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Jobcentre Plus provides resources to enable job-searchers to find work, through Jobpoints (touch-screen computer terminals), Jobseeker Direct (telephone service) and the Jobcentre Plus website. They offer information about training opportunities for the chronically unemployed. They administer claims for benefits such as Income Support, Incapacity Benefit, and Jobseeker’s Allowance (currently being phased out in favour of Universal Credit).

Find jobs on websites, by email and by text
Many jobs are advertised online, either on job search websites or on specific vacancies pages on company websites.
If you’re getting Jobseeker’s Allowance, you’ll be sent emails and text messages about job vacancies. It will not cost you anything to get the texts, and you do not have to reply.
You’ll need to set up an email address to get jobs by email and apply for jobs online. You can find a free email service on the internet. Your Jobcentre Plus adviser can help you.
You can use a computer to access the internet for free at your local Jobcentre Plus office or in your local library.
Find your local UK online centre for help getting online and using the internet.
You could be eligible for help towards the cost of travelling to a job interview. Speak to your Jobcentre Plus adviser.
Safety and security when looking for work
To make sure you’re safe when looking for a job and going to interviews, you should never:
- pay any fees upfront for help with job searches or training
- let the interview take place in your own home
- talk about personal matters that have nothing to do with the job
- accept a lift from the person interviewing you
- give out personal details about yourself or your finances until you have a job offer, for example your bank details, National Insurance number, date of birth, driving licence or utility bill information
Some job adverts have a number to call for more information. Check the cost – these could be premium rate charges.
